The next steps of the journey.
Are you looking forward or back?
We are over ¾ quarters through 2020 and oh what a year it has been so far – life as we knew it has been literally put up-side-down. There were times where I truly didn’t know where I was at and in which direction I should be looking, let alone be taking.
It’s easy to get stuck in the past and the ‘what if’s - while this is not necessarily desirable, I believe looking back and reflecting on what has been, can be beneficial.
I find it brings me a lot of clarity to sit down, grab a few blank pieces of paper to deepen the process and:
- Evaluate
- Acknowledge
- Accept
- Forgive
- Let go and release
- Be open to learn.
By honouring the (tough) lessons and experiences, they can hopefully serve as a guide in the now, right here - helping to work out what’s next and navigating the next step of the journey – with a more positive and intentional mindset.
While I’m not a detailed planner or ‘goal setter’ (I don’t have a 5- or 10-year plan per se) I like to have a clear sense of direction. What I am very mindful of is my attitude i.e. what I project towards the future, what experiences I would like to have and importantly, how I would like to feel.
Creating our future in the present moment, this concept stuck with me, thanks to Louise Hay’s book “You can heal your life” which I read some 20 years ago on my first trip back home to Germany (while waiting for my visa application to be approved so I could return to Australia). Many books have been written about this, yet the key principle remains the same and always resonated with me. Of course, I don’t always get it right - it’s an ongoing fine balance between structure, flexibility, flow and trust.
Life can take interesting turns and twists and uncertainty can be a little scary yet equally exciting to see where it leads us next. I remind myself to trust and try to make the most of life based on what I have and where things are at right now, remembering to enjoy the ride, lighten up when I get too serious and, have some fun.
And sometimes a little courage is needed and the willingness to lean out i.e. take ourselves out of our comfort zone to determine where to from here so we can get a glimpse of what might be around the corner, Lexi :)
