How do you feel about change?

Change as they say, is inevitable - regardless of how big or small, there always seems to be a certain level of discomfort that comes along with it.

Not surprising really - the reality is, any type of change takes us out of our comfort zone, especially changes we don’t initiate! They can have quite an effect on us and in my view, can feel like a double-edged sword: on one side they can bring up various survival emotions such as panic, fear, anger or a plain freeze state coupled with feeling a loss of control; on the other side, they present us with an opportunity to step back, detach, evaluate and see things from a new perspective, giving us a chance to grow and evolve.

How we deal with change can be a matter of perception or based on beliefs or past experiences but I also believe that the quality of our health and wellbeing has a significant impact on how we respond and cope with change. When we are tired or emotionally fragile, change can rattle us a lot more and potentially trigger a more intense stress reaction. When we feel calm and centred, our nervous system naturally is more stable and with that our capacity increases to handle/ manage change more effectively. I’ve noticed this time and time again with myself and observing it also in others around me including my clients. Can you relate?

Instead of resistance and constriction, we want openness and expansion so we can flow with life and any change(s) that may come our way.

To me, the key is staying grounded and connected as well as protecting our energy field – there are many ways to achieve this and I talk through strategies with my clients before, during or after a kinesiology session.

 Some examples are:

When we are grounded, it is a lot easier to deal with anxious thoughts, panic or worry and stay aware of survival emotions, rather than getting overwhelmed and engulfed by them.

In essence, when you are in survival, whether this is feeling frozen, panicky or fearful, your body, brain and survival systems are doing their job i.e. they want to keep you safe and protect you. It is up to you to recognise, acknowledge and understand these signals so you can objectively and rationally evaluate – am I in true danger right now? If you aren’t, give thanks to your body for bringing these survival emotions up and consciously let them go. I know this is easier said and done and it will take practice - be patient and compassionate with yourself.

You could say something like “Thank you body for trying to keep me safe and protected and bringing this to my attention, I’m okay right now and I can handle it.” Take a big breath and release. It may sound simple, yet it is powerful, give it a try - my clients tell me this technique works really well for them. You could also use a specific breathing technique such as described in my article further below which helps to activate your relaxation response.
